On Tuesday, a 27-year-old junior doctor, who was a second-year MD student at Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences in Saifai of Etawah district, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her hostel room on the campus. The deceased was identified as Vandana Shukla, was daughter of senior BJP leader K K Shukla and hailed from Ghaziabad.

The police suspect a case of suicide but no suicide note was found. The postmortem report of the woman, confirmed ante-mortem hanging as the cause of death.

Sub-Inspector Akhilesh Kumar, the official in-charge of Saifai police station said that in the early hours of Tuesday, few doctors went to Vandana’s assigned room to take her along to the hospital. They knocked on the door but there was no response. And they spotted her hanging from a ceiling fan. They immediately informed the hospital authorities, who alerted the police. A police team, along with the university authorities, reached the room on the university’s new campus. They broke into the room to find woman’s body hanging from the ceiling fan on a scarf. Her body was then sent for postmortem and her family members were informed.

Kumar further said that they did not find any suicide note in the room and the reason for her taking this extreme step is yet to be ascertained. Her batch-mates and her family are not able to say anything that can be suspected as a possible reason. The university administration also told that she was regularly attending her classes. The postmortem report has ruled out the likelihood of any foul play and confirmed ante-mortem hanging as the cause of death.

University spokesperson Anil Kumar Pandey said that Vandana was pursuing her post graduate degree in pathology. They are yet to talk to more people and few of her friends informed that she was last seen on Sunday and choose to stay in her room on Monday. The police are looking into this matter.

Ghaziabad BJP district president Maansingh Goswami, said that Vandana had completed her MBBS from a medical college in Hapur. Her father, K K Shukla, in the past has served several significant posts in the BJP, including its western UP media in-charge and election in-charge of Meerut district.
